Negli ultimi tempi mi è successo di frequente di scaricare qualche documento o ebook presente su numerosi siti Internet del calibro di EbooksClub o altri.
Il problema che sorgeva era che mi veniva visualizzato all’apertura del file un messaggio d’errore: impossibile visualizzare il contenuto.
Questa cosa l’ho notato in maniera molto frequente da quando ho installato sul sistema IE7.
Ho quindi erroneamente pensato che potesse dipendere da qualche controllo implementato nel nuovo browser di casa Microsoft.
Niente di piu’ sbagliato: si tratta di una feature che caratterizza WinXP SP2.

Can’t View CHM Files in IE7 - A FIX
Come notate anche dal titolo del topic anche chi ha “individuato” la soluzione al problema era erroneamente convinto che si trattasse di un problema dovuto a Internet Explorer 7.
In realtà come fa notare qualcuno nei commenti per l’appunto: “this is not IE7, this is a XP SP2 protection item.”

La cosa è confermata anche da quanto letto in un altro sito web:
“CHM files can harbor viruses (these don’t, of course) and so Microsoft decided to impose new rules on .CHM files in their latest Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP. If you are running a version of Windows older than Windows XP SP2 you can ignore the rest of this paragraph: the .CHM files will display for you without problems. But if you are running Windows XP SP2 then it is important that you elect to Save the .CHM file to your hard drive rather than Opening it directly from here. This is important because once the .CHM file is on your computer you need to right-click on its filename and then select Properties. At the bottom of the Properties page you may notice a Security warning that says “This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer”. Click on the Unblock button and you will then be able to read the complete textbook. You will know that Windows XP SP2 is blocking the .CHM file if when you try to view it every page has been replaced with the message “The page you are looking for is currently unavailable”. Note that this extra step is necessary for all .CHM files, even those that arrive inside .ZIP files.”
